We are a proper old fashioned village pub, and our doggy visitors are always made very welcome. We own two Bernese Mountain dogs, Walter and Harold, who are always in the bar and are loved by our customers. We also have a whole host of doggy “regulars” who are in the pub most days. We support the dog trust, as one of our regular doggy customers bring in home made dog biscuits which we take donations for and have raised over £400 so far. We also sell “bottom sniffer” dog beer for our thirsty doggy guests.
We even have our own beer brewed by Welbeck Abbey Brewery and named after our oldest dog Walter.
We have no dog rules, with our four legged guests allowed to go where they are most comfy, including the furniture, both bars, and the garden.
Prior to taking the pub I was a police dog handler for many years, and always help our dogs when they are having issues with their owners (it’s normally the owner that needs training not the dog).
We are in an area surrounded by lovely walks so often have new visitors, and several large shooting estates and so working dogs often call after a day out in the field.
As a totally wet led pub we don’t have issues around food, though we provide regular snacks on the bar, such as pork pie, home made sausage plait, black pudding and bread and dripping. The queue at the bar for the complimentary snacks is normally made up of four legged customers, who tend to consume the majority of it.
Sunday afternoons are doggy heaven at the Oak, when we often have more dogs than people in the bar….and we love it.
Oh and the Waltered beer is superb, and one of our best sellers!
